Chess!

For the past few weeks, Kazan has been host to the 2011 FIDE Candidates chess tournament (http://kazan2011.fide.com/), Round 3 will be played today, I believe, with the seminfinals Kamsky vs. Gelfand and Kramnik vs. Grischuk. The winner of this tournament will face current World Champion Anand (India) in 2012.

This post is about the Tatarstan-born American Player Gata Kamsky, who has been awesome in the tournament so far. In an earlier round he beat the former World Champion from Bulgaria, Topolov, in a 5.5 hour match. One interesting observation about this match is that when it came down to the wire, the Bulgarian candidate was drinking Jaguar, an alcoholic energy drink. Gotta wonder if the alcoholic energy drink will catch on in other sports. (http://englishrussia.com/index.php/2009/05/25/russian-drink-jaguar/)

Now the part about Kamsky:

He is the best US player, and beat Nigel Short, one of the best UK players, 4-1 in a five match series in 1994. Kamsky was up 3-0 when he developed a bit of a cold and started coughing on the board. Short told him to go drink some water, which is a clear violation of the rules. Kamsky lost that match (making the score 3-1), and Kamsky’s hyper-aggressive Tatar father threatened to kill Short after the game for talking to his son. Police reports were filed, Kamsky accused Short of cheating because he took an inordinate number of bathroom breaks, etc. 12 years later it seems neither party has moved on, the following chat session took place on an internet chess server:

I’d say both sides, but Short in particular, need to calm down. Chess is not meant to be a contact sport.
